starting an accounting firm

In this episode of Profits + Prosecco Podcast, I have special guest Liz Zaslove, who joined my Booked Out Bookkeeper Program™️ (BOB) in August. Liz is a certified public accountant and worked with one of the top accounting firms in the nation. Liz knew that she couldn’t maintain this crazy lifestyle no matter how much money they paid her so she created her own business known as Zaslove Accounting, which has now become her full-time job. Liz offers bookkeeping services to entrepreneurs and individuals and she's here today to share her experience. So stay tuned!

But before we dive right in, welcome to the Profits + Prosecco Podcast! I’m your host, Katie Ferro, CPA, reformed rule follower, creator of Booked Out Bookkeeper, mom to 3 little ones, and Kajabi enthusiast.

This podcast is for entrepreneurs who desire to change their life through their profitable business, and for bookkeepers and accountants who want to escape the 9-5 and start a simple scalable bookkeeping business like I did.

Bookkeeping increases profits and profits change lives. So pop some bubbles and let me show you how!

In this episode, we are going to dive into Liz’s story and how she got to this point in her business. And for even more juicy details, listen to ALL of episode 14 of the Profits + Prosecco Podcast on your fave streaming platform.

How Liz made the investment in BOB.

Liz explains that she was terrified to join the program. She asked a billion questions before joining but she was just so scared of the investment because she didn't make any money in her business yet. The idea of investing before she made the money was terrifying to her. The deadline passed and as I talked with her more, she begged to be let in. She knew she had to make the investment when her husband was also on board because he gave her the confidence to do so. She needed that extra push! When it comes to my prices, I like to keep them somewhere where people feel good about investing. I know I could charge more but I want to keep people motivated without feeling like they're being taken advantage of. Liz says she was full-heartedly invested because she knew she had to for the sake of her business. She signed a client very quickly and had the support of BOB to push her to keep going. The truth is, the results happen in your own time. For some people, it's as fast as possible and for others, they need to take breaks and breathe. From her investment in BOB, Liz became cash positive by the time she signed her second client in just month three of BOB.

The mindset shift that comes along with BOB.

Liz went from having a scarcity mindset to one full of abundance after joining BOB. If someone else in the group was to have success, it didn't mean that there was none for her. Being able to celebrate with other people made her have the confidence to get on calls with more clients. Liz knows what her time and work are worth and she makes sure to tell clients that so that if it doesn't fit them, she's not wasting their time. If you have to change yourself, your prices, and your packages to fit a client, then you can't serve them how they need to be served. When you have this type of mindset shift, a lot can change. Liz explains that her breakthrough at BOB pushed her to believe in herself and have the confidence to leave her job, which she never thought she would ever do. As a student, she learned how to bring in her own clients, build up her back end, and acquired all the strategies she needed to succeed. She believes in herself now! In BOB, you become a different version of yourself that's not better or worse, it's just different.

The change that came when Liz left her job.

Liz’s biggest challenge in BOB was deciding to leave her full-time job. It brought a lot of emotions up and it was a hard decision for her. She had feelings of failure and feelings of success but it was hard to balance out both. One thing that pushed her through was the group support of BOB. She was able to talk it out and realize that she was capable of leaving. The support you receive from the other students was incredible to Liz. She says that it's helpful to have the group as a resource and make friends that are on a similar path. The support got her through her decision that ended up being her best decision. It was up to her to do the next thing and show up to make this new job work. Just because something served you at one point in your life, doesn't mean it has to be with you forever. You might be good at what you do, but your company or firm will not burn down in your absence. Of course, they're going to miss you but other qualified applicants can take your position. You are not doing any service for yourself by staying at a job that's not serving you.

How Liz wants her business to affect her and her client's lives.

Liz wants her profitable business to provide her the freedom to serve her clients in a way that fits. She wants to have the freedom to be authentic and help clients in a good way. She isn't serving anybody if she has to force them into a box that they don't fit into. When it comes to her clients, Liz wants to come in and take the stress off their finances. Personal finances are probably one of the top three things that stress people out and she wants to be that person that they can rely on. The clients Liz works with have been able to show up more in their business because they are not sitting at the computer trying to figure out their accounting situation. Overall, she wants to help people show up in a way they want to while still getting the freedom in her own life.

A BOB Student's Journey to Starting a Virtual Accounting Firm: The Bottomline

I hoped this episode helped you see the impact BOB has on its students and why your corporate job is not always everything. Liz was able to quit her job that she never planned on leaving just five months into BOB. She is way more confident when it comes to dealing with clients and has a whole different mindset in the work she does.
