I’m excited for you to listen to this episode of Profits + Prosecco Podcast! During this episode I was lucky enough to be joined by a very special guest & participant in my Become a Bookkeeper program, Kelly Wigington.

Kelly is the owner of Summer Dove Bookkeeping, wife of a hobby enthusiast, and Mama to three wild little boys. She lives in the mountains of East Tennessee where she and her family go on lots of adventures. She runs on coffee, Jesus, and sarcasm, and she strives to help everyone around her feel at peace.

If you visit her Instagram, you’ll see Kelly has a prospering bookkeeping business of her own. Her path there was a bit winding which was fun to learn about.

Not only that, but she learned some pretty incredible things from my Become a Bookkeeper series, so we touched on that experience as well.

Crunching the Numbers, Not Becoming Accountants

It was really exciting to hear someone’s first-hand experience on the courses I design, and it’s a blast getting to share that feedback with you. It’s one thing for me to advertise for myself, but to hear testimonials from people who were genuinely helped by my program is so rewarding.

Kelly was actually already a bookkeeper when she found my program. While she received her accounting degree, she also knew that a run on the corporate hamster wheel didn’t align with her goals for the future. Not about that corporate 60-hours-a-week life. (Preach, sister!)

Two kids later, she was a stay-at-home mom who found the prospect less than fulfilling, due to some postpartum depression (We've got to start talking openly about this and I appreciate her honesty). No one likes a job where they feel like they’re failing.

Cut to Kelly falling into a job as a bookkeeper for her church. And then a friend asks for help with organizing his books. And then he wants monthly assistance because she does such a great job.

And the rest is history. So naturally, cue imposter syndrome...

Imposter Monster

But what can you do? I mean she’s got an official degree that basically says “Hey world, I like numbers but not enough to officially file your taxes.” It’s not like there’s a certification or course solely for bookkeeping….

Or is there?!

My Become a Bookkeeper (BABs) program is designed for beginners who have no experience in the bookkeeping field, but it’s actually great for any level.

Kelly mentioned that imposter syndrome really held her back in terms of being confident while interacting with clients — crucial at all times, but vital when trying to land new ones.

Now, let me be clear; this is not a program specifically dedicated to netting new leads (conveniently for you though, that’s covered in my Booked Out Bookkeeper™ (BOB) course ;)

But in terms of feeling like you know what you’re talking about/being able to ask the right questions and giving accurate and professional answers to clients, this course will help you feel more confident. I even let you have a moment of me onboarding a client in real-time, in all its informative and awkward glory.

It’s also just a good refresher; Kelly said it was a great reminder full of important tips she had forgotten about, and weirdly it’s a huge confidence booster when you’re covering familiar territory. Nothing says you know your shit quite like breezing through most lessons because you’re on top of your game.

BABs also teaches everything within the framework of a bookkeeping lens so you get a source for all materials, reframed and tailored to your current business. It does teach using Xero, but even if you’re team Quickbooks, why not widen your client pool?

You’ll even learn to talk to that which has confounded both bookkeepers and non for eons; the native tongue of the CPA.

Become a Bookkeeper: The Bottomline

Essentially, whether you want to get started, want a refresher in a concise and efficient presentation, or want to level up your confidence in your business, this is the course for you.

Fundamentals are the building blocks for any small business, and you want to make sure you have a solid foundation to build on. If your foundation is shaky, or you’re constantly faking it till you make it, that will eventually show.

It’ll show when you’re flustered with your clients, and it’ll show when you feel like you’re not good enough to take on someone new. In the end, you’re hindering yourself and your potential.

Don’t you owe it to yourself and your clients to invest your time and money to be the most confident bookkeeper you can be?

Kelly knew that she did, and look at her now. Look at her Instagram. Look at it! It’s curated AF, and her tips are straight fire! Her financial prowess is second to none and her color schemes leave nothing to be desired. EXUDES confidence. This could be you!
